What are the benefits of planning your work?

Any one considering working from home needs to consider the importance of planning.  Like any job situation one needs to set goals and tasks that are achievable.  In this way you will get the maximum results out of your day and still feel you have a life.

A Home Office

The most important thing of all is to consider where you are going to work.  It doesn’t have to be a room dedicated to your work but there needs to be an area where you can store your tools or books or related research material.  If your work involves studying, then you will need somewhere to store your disks and any necessary correspondence.  You will also need somewhere to store your correspondence and to keep your accounting receipts, etc.

Working from home does not have to be expensive. A shoe box is good at storing filing cards with information on them, a draw or cardboard box can be adapted for storage. You just need to decide on the most important things you need and see how inventive you can be in providing the item.  E-bay and second hand stores are useful and you may find friends wanting to get rid of things or have a spare desk of chair lying around.  It is amazing what some people keep in their garages.

Work where you are

If you are using the internet and only need a computer to work on then you can choose to work in your lounge, a summer house, your garden, or even a local café.  This is one of the benefits of internet work in that you can choose to work wherever you happen to be at the time.  This means you can even spend agreed parts of the day on holiday so that you are not tied to the office during school holidays when you could be enjoying family time.
